Preparing for the Entrance Interview

The fire department entrance interview can be one of the most stressful job interviews you will go through.  You will most likely interview in front of a group of Chiefs or other high ranking department members.  Sometimes Chiefs from other departments will be brought in to assist in the interview.  Representatives from the City's Human Resource department or recruiting office may also be present.  You should plan on interviewing in front of 5-9 people.

Public speaking is the number 1 listed fear in the United States.  Be sure to speak calmly and clearly.  Review our sample interview questions, but don't try to script them.  Simply think about how you want to answer the question and write out "talking points".  These should highlight the main points you want to hit when you answer these questions.

Its a good idea to practice answering questions in front of family or friends.  You can use a mirror or even videotape yourself.  Be sure to avoid annoying habits like chewing gum, tapping toes or fingers, or playing with keys in your pocket.
