Base Firefighter Salaries

Firefighting is not a career that will make you rich.  However most departments offer exceptional benefits packages, competitive salaries, and solid promotional opportunities. In 2010 firefighter base salaries range from $30,081 (25th percentile) to $50,285 (75th percentile) with the average being about $41,000 through the United States.  Larger cities typically offer higher base salaries.  Many smaller to mid-sized cities have lower salaries, but more overtime opportunities.

Be sure to carefully examine benefits packages.  Many cities pay a large portion (some up to 90%) of health insurance premiums, offer personal days, sick leave, and vacation days.  During your job search be sure to compare apples to apples. While some cities may pay more, they may offer a weaker benefits package.
